WE GOT LUCKY.
Thankfully, the tsunami was minor and the worse we got was a day off from work. These are photos from Chile, where the real tragedy happened. I think people here are too quick to blow off the tsunami and not realize what happened in order for this tsunami to occur.
8.8 is NO JOKE. Apparently, that’s one of the biggest earthquakes EVER RECORDED, yet all we did here in Hawaii was bitch and moan that the road to our house was closed.
At least we have a house to go home to.
These are just some of the shots I culled from boston.com the past couple of hours. As you can see, destruction is widespread and relief is only now starting to flow in. The world has already suffered through two other earthquakes this year (Haiti and Japan), so another earthquake was definitely not needed.
I’m sorry that the tsunami ruined your plans for the day and all you did was sit around and watch TV. I actually had fun doing that and was grateful I wasn’t trying to clean up washed up sea life in front of my house. Instead, I had a bunch of friends over and watched a pretty entertaining Syracuse/Villanova game.
But, what annoys me is reading peoples responses that the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center should be criticized or even reprimanded for DOING THEIR JOB. It also annoys me how people are so quick to call out Mother Nature for not causing a huge wave for their entertainment. Again, I’d rather be bored at home, than trying to clean up stray sea life.
Don’t EFF with Nature. One of my co-workers put it best when he said that moments like this is like God saying “You ain’t ish” to us cocky humans.
So, big UPS to the Tsunami Warning Center for getting everyone informed and up to date on what was going on, the rescue services for making sure people got out of danger zones ASAP, and the majority of Hawaii for keeping it calm.
Well, what do we do now?
For starters: start praying.
Pray for the world, pray for healing, pray for a quick recovery.
Secondly, help out or donate whatever you can. I know people made a huge ruckus about donating money to Haiti, but this earthquake is just as bad. Send some relief money their way. Hit up the Red Cross and donate something.
Thirdly, be grateful. Thank the people that help neutralize what could have been a potential riot-causing situation. This could have been much worse without the work of all the individuals involved.
Now that we’ve helped Haiti a little bit, let’s send some love and good vibes to Chile.
